MOUNT KENYA CLIMBING
Mount Kenya is the second highest mountain in Africa after Kilimanjaro. The highest peaks of the mountain are; Batian ( 5199 m, 17057 ft ), Nelion ( 5188 m, 17021 ft ) and point Lenana (4985 m, 16355 ft ). The most ascended peak is point Lenana as is the highest can be trekked without technical support. This mountain is regarded among the most beautiful mountains around the world.
With a decent level of fitness and trekking at a sensible pace plus keeping hydrated makes all the difference to the Summit .The mountain remains accessible throughout the year as even the long rains there’s usually reliable sunshine for a good portion of the day. Temperatures vary considerably with height, climate and weather. Daytime ranges from 5 to 15 degrees while the nights and on the summit be prepared to temperatures well below freezing.
There are three main trekking routes namely; Sirimon, Narumoru and Chogoria routes among others like; Timau, Kamweti and Burguret routes which are not very common in use but each route has something different to offer. An accent or decent via Chogoria route is the most spectacular of all the routes for a photogenic hiker as it takes in great beautiful sceneries.
Rock climbing Batian and Nelion peaks depends on which period of the year, like the South Facing side it’s in condition from December to March while the North Facing side it’s best from June to October. There’s also a Peak Circuit trail that circumnavigates the main peaks giving you great views from all the angles.
Mount Kenya boosts different high altitude alpine vegetation, tropical forests, lots of birds species and various large and small wild animals which spice up the the hiking environment to be superb. Apart from hiking this mountain one can combine it with a wildlife safari to national reserves which are close to the mountain.

5 Days Sirimon – Chogoria Route.
Day 1; Nairobi – Nanyuki – Old Moses camp [ 3300 m ]
Leave from your pick up place at around 8.00 am and drive along via the great northern road of Kenya passing the central highlands toplain lands arriving Nanyuki town in about 4 hrs. Have lunch from this town and meet the rest of climbing crew and continue driving to Mount Kenya National park Sirimon gate for 45 min. Check in the park and start your hiking along a paved road to Old Moses camp in 3 hrs. Dinner and Overnight at the camp.
Day 2; Old Moses camp – Shiptons camp [4200 m ]
After having breakfast, leave the camp trekking along a single trail crossing Ontulili, Likii and Mackinders valley s arriving to Shiptons camp in 5 – 6 hrs. Lunch will have been packed for you. Dinner and overnight at the camp.
Day 3; Acclimatization day
It is on this day that you will hike to Hausberg col [4600 m] in 2 – 3 hrs to acclimatize with altitude and take a rest ahead of the summit. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and overnight at Shiptons camp.
Day 4; Shiptons camp – Summit [ 4985 m ] – Mt Kenya lodge [2600 m ]
Wake up at around 0200 hrs ,take a simple breakfast and hit the trail in the dark reaching to the summit [ Point Lenana ] for a spectacular sunrise. After taking some photos, hike down towards Chogoria route via Mintos hut for full breakfast and continuing over the gorges ridge down to Roadhead camping sitefor lunch. After lunch continue to Mount Kenya Meru lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 5; Mount Kenya Lodge – Nairobi
After having breakfast, leave the lodge and check out of the park gate and proceed hiking down through bamboo forests for 2 hs. Board a vehicle taking you down through the thick rain forest reaching Chogoria town. From here connect with another vehicle taking you back to Nairobi or your onward destination.
4 Days Sirimon Route
Day 1; Nairobi – Old Moses Camp [3300 m]
Leave Nairobi in the morning driving towards the north side of Kenya reaching Nanyuki town for lunch. Meet your climbing crew that is the porters and guides at this point. Afterwards proceed driving to Mount Kenya Sirimon gate, check in the park and start trekking to Old Moses camp for 3 hrs. Dinner and Overnight at the camp.
Day 2; Old Moses camp – Shiptons camp [4200 m]
After taking some early breakfast, start trekking to Shiptons camp crossing Ontulili, Likii and Mackinders valleys reaching to the camp in 5 – 6 hrs. Lunch would have been packed for you. Dinnner and Overnight at the camp.
Day 3; Shiptons – Summit [4985 m ] – Old Moses
At 0200 hrs, wake up and have a simple breakfast and start trekking to the summit [ Point Lenana ] to catch up with sunrise. Take some photos and start heading back to Shiptons for heavy breakfast. Afterwards continue down along Mackinders valley all the way to Old Moses camp. Dinner and Overnight at the camp.
Day 4; Old Moses – Sirimon gate – Nairobi
After having breakfast , leave the camp hiking down along the paved road through bamboo and rain forests reaching the gate. Check out of the park, board a vehicle taking you back to Nairobi or onward destination.
4 Days Narumoru Route
Day 1; Nairobi – Narumoru Gate - Met station [3300 m]
Leave Nairobi in the morning driving toward the northern side of Kenya reaching Narumoru town, meet the rest of your climbing crew, have lunch and continue driving till Mount Kenya Narumoru gate. Check in the park and start trekking to first camp, Met station for 10 kms.
Day 2; Met Station – Mackinders camp [4300 m]
After having your breakfast, leave the camp trekking over vertical bogs and moorland vegetation reaching to Mackinders camp along the Teleki valley in 4-5 hrs. Lunch would have been packed for you. Dinner and Overnight at the camp.
Day 3; Mackinders Camp – Summit [4985 m ] – Met Station
At 0200 hrs, wake up and have a simple breakfast start hiking along Teleki valley and climb a steep ascent passing Austrian hut and then to point Lenana to catch up with sunrise. Once at the summit, take some few photos and start heading down back to Mackinders camp for full breakfast. Afterwards continue down along Teleki valley back to Met Station for dinner and overnight.
Day 4; Met Station – Narumoru gate – Nairobi
After having breakfast ,leave the camp via bamboo and tropical forests reaching Narumoru gate in about 2 hrs. Check out of the park, board your vehicle driving back to Nairobi or onward destination.
6 Days Chogoria – Sirimon / Narumoru routes
Day 1; Nairobi – Chogoria – Mt Kenya Lodge [ 2600 m ]
Leave from your pick up place and drive via the great northern road passing rice plantations and eastern highlands arriving Chogoria town in 4 hrs. It is from this town you will have lunch and meet the rest of your climbing crew and proceed with the driving through the thick rain fofests to bamboo forest. You will start trekking from here to Mount Kenya Chogoria gate where you will check in the park and continue to the lodge. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Day 2; Mt Kenya lodge – Road head campsite [3300 m ]
After having breakfast , leave the lodge for road head camping site hiking along a rough road for 3 hrs. In the afternoon local explore to Nithi falls and caves. Lunch, dinner and Overnight at the camp.
Day 3; Road head camp – Lake Ellis [ 3400 m ]
After packing and breakfast, leave to lake Ellis and local explore round the lake and hike to Mugi hill for great spectacular views of the mountain and the lands down. Lunch, dinner and overnight at the camping site.
Day 4; Lake Ellis – Mintos Hut / Hall Turns [ 4200 m ]
After having breakfast, leave the camp to Mintos hut trekking along a single trail through alpine and moorland vegetation. You should be having enough water with you as there’s no water fetching point along this trail. Lunch will have been packed for you. Dinner and night at the camp.
Day 5; Mintos Hut – Summit [ 4985 m ] down either Sirimon or Narumoru route
Wake up at 0200 hrs , have a simple breakfast and hit the trail in the dark to the summit [Point Lenana] catching up with sunrise. If the weather is very clear, Mt Kilimanjaro is visible from this point. After taking some photos start heading down to Mackinders hut [ Narumoru route ] or towards Shiptons hut [ Sirimon route ] for full breakfast.
After having a rest and breakfast, leave the hut continuing down along valleys reaching to the next camp for dinner and overnight.
Day 6; Met Station [Narumoru route ] / Old Moses [Sirimon route ] – Back to Nairobi
After breakfast, leave the camp hiking along paved road through bamboo and rain forests to the gate. Check out of the park and board a vehicle taking you back to Nairobi or your onward destination.
7 Days Mount Kenya Rock climbing
Mount Kenya has two main rock climbing summits. Batian the highest 5199 m, Second highest is Nelion 5188 m among other peaks like; point Lenana 4985 m which is the 3rd highest peak that one access without technical difficulties, point Piggot 4957 m, point Dutton 4885 m and point John 4883 m. Rock climbing Batian and Nelion peaks requires lot of high technical climbing gears and the associated skills plus a qualified and experienced technical guide.
Climbing these peaks depends on which period of the year. The South Facing side tackling Neion normal route it is in condition from December to March using the Austrian Hut at 4800 m as the base camp. The North Facing side tackling Batian normal route it is in condition from June to October using Shiptons camp at 4200 m as the base camp.
One rock climbs these peaks in 2-3 days which are additional from the normal hiking itinerary but one can also add more days regarding that the weather changes hence making climbing difficult.
