6 Days: Chogoria-Sirimon

This route on Mount Kenya is the most beautiful and rewarding for hikers interested in spectacular landscapes and exotic fauna and flora. When you camp along this trek it gives you time to local explore places like; Lake Ellis, Mugi Hill and Nithi Falls. Spending a night at Austrian hut (4790m), makes it easier to the Summit as the distance in between is shorter. Here is a sample of itinerary of the route and decent via Sirimon route.

Day 1; Nairobi – Chogoria Town – Meru Lodge [2900 m]

Leave from your pick up place and drive  via the great northern road passing rice plantations and eastern highlands arriving Chogoria town in 4 hrs. It is from this town you will have lunch and meet the rest of your climbing crew (porters) and proceed with the driving through rain forest for about 1hr. The trekking starts at bamboo forest to Chogoria park gate campsite. Dinner and overnight at the camp.

Day 2; Meru Lodge – Road head campsite [3300 m]

After having breakfast, leave the camp for road head camping site trekking along a rough road and breathtaking views of vast Mount Kenya vegetation arriving to the campsite in 3 hrs. In the afternoon local explore to Nithi falls and Lake Ellis. Lunch, dinner and Overnight at the camp.

Day 3; Road head camp – Mintos Campsite [4200 m]

After having breakfast, leave the camp to Mintos hut trekking along a single trail through alpine and moorland vegetation. The trek between the two camps there’s no water point so one should have enough water wit him. Lunch will have been packed for you. Dinner and night at the camp.

Day 4; Mintos Camp –Austrian hut (4790m)

Wake up at 7am, have breakfast and start trekking along the Gorges valley reaching tooth col at 4700m. From this point one enjoys the great views of Dalmare peaks, Gallery tarns and Hanging tarns. Continue trekking along rocky and scree surface reaching Austrian hut. Lunch and dinner at the Hut. Approx distance takes 4- 5 hrs.

Day 5; Austrian Hut –Point Lenana (4985m) – Old Moses Camp (3300m)

Wake up at around 0400hrs, have a simple breakfast, gear up and start hiking along a steep and rocky trail of which is fitted with supporting cables to the Summit. From the Summit, you’ll enjoy the spectacular sun rise views and when the weather is very clear, Mount Kilimanjaro is visible. Take some photos and start descending down to Shiptons Camp for full breakfast.

After breakfast and some rest, continue trekking down along the Mackinders valley crossing Likki and Ontulili valleys to Old Moses Camp. The approx distance from Shiptons to Old Moses Camp takes about 5-6 hrs. Lunch will be provided along the way, dinner and overnight at the Camp.

Day 6; Old Moses Camp – Sirimon gate – Nairobi

After the breakfast, leave the camp trekking down along a paved road passing bamboo and tropical forests reaching the gate in about 2hrs.Check out of the park and board your transport to Nairobi or onward destination.
